Hi All,

As of the 4th of July this year I will be over a quarter of a century old and I was thinking of celebrating it at the SACC Westward Ho! weekend 29 June - 1 July. The plan would be to have a BBQ on the Saturday night to celebrate my Birthday.

So please come along, even if you just fancy a relaxing weekend camping in the sun with a bit of surfing.

If you want more surf info or camping info look at the event details page for Westward Ho!

http://sacc.co.uk/html/EventDetails.html

Please let me or John Woods know if you would like to come along.

In meantime enjoy the sun this weekend at Biblins

Hazel

It's getting closer. The first SACC weekend by the sea for 2012.

A few people have expressed interest and although it's still a long way off in forecast terms, things are looking promising. It looks like we should have some waves, though not classic surf due to strongish winds, some sun and possibly the odd shower - a bit of everything. Come on down for a cheap weekend by the sea in good company. £5 pppn camping. Plus a birthday BBQ on the Saturday. If you fancy getting your kayak in the sea (not compulsory) we'll try and point you in the right direction. For those that are experienced in the surf already some demo surf kayaks will be available.

If the surf looks ok I'll be on the sea Friday evening for a session before getting to the campsite around 7.30/8pm in time to get set up and head into Appledore for food & drink. Come and join me. The toll road to the beach stops charging around 5pm. We generally surf from the middle of the beach near the lifeguard hut.

I need to have an indication of numbers that I can give to Skern Lodge so please let me know if you are coming and which nights.

Thanks

John

ps first timers may benefit from looking at http://www.sacc.co.uk/PDF/Surfing_Guide.doc for a bit of guidance.

Sorry to say that it looks like Amy and I will not be coming down as we have people staying for the week-end and Amy has party invitations. We wish you a great week-end and a very happy birthday to Hazel.

There are a few people put their names down who haven't been to one of these before so here are a few map links to help you out. The location they refer to is the centre of the map.

Skern Lodge http://goo.gl/maps/24Up

Normal Surfing spot https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=appledore&hl=en&ll=51.052516,-4.230133&spn=0.004188,0.012724&t=h&hnear=Appledore,+Devon,+United+Kingdom&z=17

Nearest car park to end of beach http://goo.gl/maps/PbcP

The wind is forecast pretty strong today but not as bad tomorrow. The surf will be messy but at least there'll be waves. In the event that the wind is strong tomorrow we may have to head to the Westward Ho! end of the beach in search of a little shelter. If you are coming down tomorrow and it seems very windy it would be worth heading into the town and checking out the sea to find out where we are. The shortest walk to the sea at that end is the very small car park in the above map. Not sure what it costs. There is a toll road across the Burrows and along the back of the pebble ridge. This costs £4.50 per day for multiple visits and parking but is free when the toll booths are unmanned. They are normally manned from around 9.30 to 5pm.

Even if you haven't booked in, just come on down. There are should be between 15 & 20 of us there based on those that have booked in plus another 4 that may turn up.

John

Post Succesful weekend - I think ! Reply with quote
Having had to cancel the first weekend due to no surf, at least this one went ahead and there was no shortage of waves though sadly far from ideal waves. We had 11 camping Friday night, though I was the only one to get there early enough to surf for a couple of hours. This was probably the best surf of the weekend though it was raining and windy.

On Saturday Hailey arrived in time for breakfast, as did Luke just for the day. John, Aaron & friend also came down for the day. Kate, Mark & Will, Karen & Sam, Mike & Leonie arrived later so in total 23 people turned up for various lengths of time. Comfortably the best turn out for some time. Thanks all of you.

Conditions were far from ideal. It was very windy all weekend, cross-onshore on Saturday and onshore on Sunday resulting in plenty of waves but hard work paddling and not the best surfing - fun though.

Plenty of plusses from the weekend. We introduced quite a few people to surfing in kayaks and all those I spoke to were extremely enthusiastic (if not hooked). We took out a couple of demo boats from Skern - James enjoyed himself, Woody found a boat he liked and Luke actually said he could now see how surfing could be great fun. I reckon they're just hooked on speed. James proved he was just as good a baker as paddler with his birthday cake for Hazel (it really was good). Best of all Kate showed me the samphire beds near Skern which was a nice treat for dinner tonight.

The next weekend at Skern is August Bank Holiday weekend but there is a Gower trip two weeks before.

John

Thanks for organising the weekend, John.

I had a great time - there were baby waves to order for my first go in the surf and I will definitely be returning for more! I had fun! Very Happy
