Hi All,

The Turf Locks Trip is scheduled to take place this weekend. When I asked earlier in the year there was some potential interest but no 100% confirmations. If you do want to go please can you confirm below (Unfortunately I can no onger attend myself).

Thanks,

Matt

Yes, I'd love to come - but just for the Saturday.

So,

I am aware of potential interest from Barney & Meg, Neil and Karianna, Ciaran and Hugh.

The campsite is already booked (courtesy of Colin), but as things stand we lack a formal leader for the trip.

So it may go ahead if those who expressed an interest still wish to do so, but I don't think we can class it as official club event and it will therefore not be covered by the clubs insurance.

Hugh - If I understand things correctly it is two one-directional paddles with an overnight camp. I'm not sure if it is possible to attend for one day only unless you are able to arrange your own transportation back to the start. Good to see you up for it though so if this weekend isn't possible there is another paddle pencilled in for Sunday 27th which is a day paddle and seems likely to go ahead. The second Biblins weekend will also be going ahead on 8th Sept which is normally very good.

Good news Matt.
I have done the trip a couple of years ago, so know how it goes. I confirm that I can arrange my own transport for a day-trip (advantages of a packable canoe, and a reasonable public transport system).
What time do we meet, and is it still at the quayside opposite the customs house?

Hi Hugh,

The arrangements will need to be discussed and agreed amongst those who have expressed an interest as the club doesn't have anyone available to formally lead the trip at the moment.

Hopefully you can use this thread to arrange, there is also some discussion on our facebook page (which I have tried to summarise here)

OK. So, from what I know, the crossing from Topsham to Turf Lock is only possible at high tide - maybe a little while either side? High Water is at 17.35 BST, so at a guess this would mean aiming to cross from 17.00.
The distance from Exeter to Topsham's about 4.00 miles. Allowing a speed of 2mph (going slow, with pauses) that means 2 hours. So, on the water at maybe 15.00 - earlier if we want a late lunch/cream tea in topsham.
The weather forecast looks ok, though the wind should be 14-16mph which might get hard work. At least it's WSW, so from the side rather than head-on; but I expect it'll make the shallow estuary water quite choppy. I don't know how Haldon Hills shape it - I guess it might go round the NW end, so come more from the W; or round the SE end, so more from the S - and more of a problem for us.
What do others think? I'll have to keep an eye on the wind forecast - it might be a bit much for me, in which case I'd not come.

Hi Hugh,

I have just checked the Facebook site and all other than Ciaran have now confirmed that they will not be attending due to the general lack of interest. Although he has not yet said this I suspect that the same will apply for Ciaran.

So, I'm afraid to say that it looks like the trip will not go ahead this year.
