Post Surfing Weekend 5-7 July Reply with quote
This is a camping weekend next to the sea at Appledore, with two days surfing on the beach at Westward Ho! (get there early for a Friday evening session). The camping will be a field just outside the entrance to Skern Lodge Activity Centre which has plenty of space and a great view.

We have access to the Lodge facilities including showers and toilets plus an outside cold water sink for tidying up. They also have a small bar we can use. In the camping field there is just a drinking water tap - it is not a full campsite so facilities such as electric hookup are missing. If you don’t fancy camping they may have some residential accommodation available at about £36 pppn (last years price) including breakfast & dinner. Breakfast and dinner are available in the lodge for campers if booked. Accommodation and meals need to be booked in advance please. Camping will be £5pppn.

This is not a club event with coaches or leaders just a gathering of club members for a fun weekend by the sea. I am happy to give tips and guidance but if you want proper surf coaching it should be possible to book a Skern Lodge surf coach for a half or full day if required or book access to their heated pool for rolling practice. Skern Lodge also have a number of Mega Surf Kayaks demonstrators available. If they are not required for a course or a competition, you may be able to try one of those. This is a really excellent opportunity to have a play in a pukka surf boat - you won’t believe the difference. Go on, take the opportuinity.

We need to let Skern Lodge know the numbers in advance so if you would like to go please post here with which nights you will be staying.

Thanks

John

Sorry about the late notice, but we'd love to come on down for Saturday night if there's space still - the three of us, Mark, Kate and Will, plus a possible extra three - Will's brother James, uncle and cousin (he's onl 4 so won't be surfing!).

I often fish for small bass on the incoming tide. Not yet managed to catch one of takable size which should ideally be 45cm, loads up to about 30cm. They run along the beach and up the estuary. In good conditions, which we'll have, you can see them in the surf. I fly fish for them and its great fun, very visual but you can bait fish as well or spin.

Only caveat is to take care at low tide as parts of the beach are opened up that become cut off as the tide comes in. The run up the estuary has large areas of slippery round rocks that need negotiating as well. it's all very doable though if you're careful. That's all the fishing I have experience of down there but you always see people fishing off the jetty in Appledore so I assume they catch something !
