Post September Bibins Reply with quote
September Biblins,

Hi Everyone,

Biblins is booked for the 2nd 3rd 4th of September 2016

For those of you who have not been before this is one of the club's main training events and a well attended social event. Depending on interest we can run Paddle Power, 1*, 2*, 3* and improver's training in kayaks and open boats to cover the BCU syllabus. 1* courses can include assessment and there will be the opportunity for those who have done some 2* training before to do a BCU 2* assessment (includes open boat and kayak skills). We camp at the youth site by the Wye and evenings are spent socialising around a camp fire. As per last year we be running a throw line Olympics competition on the Saturday evening so get practicing!

It would be useful to check the http://sacc.co.uk/HTML/CourseStructure.html on the website to check which level course you would benefit from. Don't forget your logbooks, these can be printed and filled out during the weekend to record your progress.

PLEASE let us know which courses you are interested in by posting on the forum or e-mailing Neil (jai.palmer@hotmail.co.uk), when responding. Please email colin if your require boat hire at c.southcombe@hotmail.co.uk.

We also need to know who is available to coach and help on courses!

Biblins costs (Last years - might be slightly different this year.):
camping £3.50 per child, £6.00 per adult per night (includes launching)
day rate £3.50 per person (includes launching)
extended use £1.50 per person to use facilities after noon (on last day)
car parking £2.00 per vehicle per day
launching fee £1.50 per boat (youth cost)

SACC costs:
Training courses £10.00 per person per day.
Boat hire £5 - Either the open boat trailer or kayak trailer can be brought depending on which boats are needed.

Campsite Additional Information
Additional information can be found by looking at the Biblins website here: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/biblins

PLEASE NOTE - NO CARAVANS, CAMPERVANS OR ALCOHOL (same as in previous years)

For those of you arriving on Saturday morning could you please be ready to meet at 9.00 so if you want to put tents up before paddling then you need to arrive earlier. I expect most of us will arrive Friday afternoon / evening

I am hoping that several of you are now ready for the BCU 2* assessment, please follow the links on the sacc website to check the syllabus to make sure you know what the 2* award covers in both a kayak and open boat. Let me know if you think you are ready for assessment.

Please car share if possible as the warden does not like too many cars on the site. Also remember it is a youth site so we must not be seen drinking alcohol and leaving any evidence - keep any bottles and cans well hidden in your tent / vehicle and take home the empties.

Just so everyone is aware we are on pitch 9 & 10 which is near the end of the site following the track left from the main gate.

Please can everyone also remember to ensure they close the gates, keep your speed down and not park on the grass.

look forward to hearing from you,

Cheers

Neil

Hi Neil,

I'll be there for Saturday and Sunday, planning to arrive Friday evening.

I'd really like to do open boating one of the days, including getting some practice on Symonds Yat. Then kayaking on Symonds Yat the other day ideally but I could always help out with coaching instead if needed.

Hi Neil,
Will be coming with Daisy and Will - as will be Will's first time, I had probably need to hang about near his group... otherwise would like to be in an improvers group.
Thanks, Rona.

Hello all
One week to go. Here are the names I have so far. If I have missed anyone out let me know.
If anyone needs a kayak for the weekend. Contact Colin to book a boat. The Tuesday trailer will not be at Bibins, so you will have to collect kayaks and kit from the barn.

Amy and I would like to come along for the Saturday. Amy will kayak and i would be happy to do the same or do some open boating. Happy to lend a hand with backing up a leader or just join in. Sorry for the late posting, only just checked that we are both free that day.

Hi All,

I am in the process of joining and would like to attend the Biblins weekend. I am a beginner so happy to do whatever is appropriate and just gain some experience. Would prefer to Kayak but as there may not be a boat big enough for me am happy with open boat.

I note that the trailer will not be going to Biblins and that if a boat is needed it must be collected from the barn. I don't know where this is and don't yet have a rack or similar to transport a boat on my car. Is anyone able to help or advise? Would something like this be up to the task?

Thanks,

Matt

Hello Matt

You tried the GTMax at the docks. That is the biggest kayak the club has. (Unless any one else has any ideas on this). I can bring a Dagger Mamba 8.6. Give that a go.
The Open boat trailer will be at Biblins.

I have a helmet for you. Just bring your buoyancy aid and camping gear.

Thanks Neil,

I have been googling to see if there are any options with a larger cockpit. My main problem seemed to be getting my thighs under the pads (?) on the side of the cockpit on the dagger. Do you think something like this would be any good?

http://www.riberproducts.com/#!1001-one-man-sit-in-kayak/c1ima

Fairly cheap and the cockpit seems to be quite a bit longer than the Dagger.

Or this..

http://www.aswatersports.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=21_22&products_id=1356&osCsid=f2daf037091af9dcb6d6160cab1ea25b

The cockpit seems larger and is closer to home to go and try it out.

Also, although I'm happy to buy myself a boat I have nowhere to store it (in the short term at least). If i did go ahead and buy something would it be possible to store it at the club facilities in return for making it available for club use and or an appropriate fee?

Thanks again,

Matt
