There appears to be demand for another surf trip so I have booked out the field at Skern Lodge for the 17th/18th September for a late summer paddle. If the weather is bad, it can be cancelled. Save the date, or register your interest here!

This is a camping weekend next to the sea at Appledore, with two days surfing or chilling on the beach at Westward Ho! The camping will be a field just outside the entrance to Skern Lodge Activity Centre which has plenty of space and a great view.

We have access to the Lodge facilities including showers and toilets plus an outside cold water sink for tidying up. In the camping field there is just a drinking water tap - it is not a full campsite so facilities such as electric hookup are missing. Camping is £8 per person per night.

This is not a club event with coaches or leaders just a gathering of club members for a fun weekend by the sea. We can help out and give some guidance to get you going. There is also the chance to try out proper surf boats if they are available - just be warned, you may like them! Family are welcome to join as well.

If you don't fancy the water, there is plenty of opportunity to walk the coast paths and relax in Appledore and just generally enjoy the area.

I plan to arrive Friday evening and camp Friday and Saturday nights.

Attendees

Both nights

Michael
Kate
Dave W
Trevor
Helen
Elena
Arran
Neil P
James P
Bethany P
James
Hazel
Matt H

Partial nights

Martyn (Sat only)

Hi Foxy
Count me in hopefully for both nights.
Thanks for organising this. The last surf weekend was brilliant.

Hi,

I hope to come along to this. Not yet sure if it will be the full weekend though. Hopefully will have a new boat to try out!

Any more last minute entries?

Weather is looking OK for most of the weekend - and surf is looking very beginner friendly at 2 - 3ft.

Please help everything run smoothly by reading the following information.

For the regulars, please note that the toilets and showers that we can use has changed.

Camping

o Please drive slowly, and take care walking along the drive.
o Football (if applicable!) – in the field please, not around the buildings.
o Please use the litter bins provided.

Toilets and Showers

Come in the drive, the showers and toilets can be accessed at the back of the Orchard building to your right. This is the back of the building where the sink can be found.

Water

Water tap at the far side of the camping field. There is cold water and a sink for washing up on the back of the Orchard building. Come in the drive gateway and turn immediately right.

Valuables

We don’t normally have a security problem, but any valuables left in tents or cars are at your own risk. Valuables may be left in the office if you wish, with access 9am to 5pm (or lock in your car).

Residential groups

It is a busy weekend at the Lodge and we also have some residential groups staying with us. Both group leaders and Skern Lodge are very aware of security when bringing pupils away from home. Please help us avoid any problems by not entering any of the accommodation buildings, Courtyard area or drying rooms. Thank you.

Activity equipment

There is strictly no access to the Assault Course, High Ropes, Climbing Walls, Swimming Pool, stores and other obvious activity areas without a Skern Instructor.

Fire Alarm

If the fire alarm sounds whilst you are here, return to your tents and account for all your group. If there is any problem, report to Skern staff by the equipment stores.

Skern Staff

The office will be manned from 9am to 5pm each day. Please call into the office if you have any queries.

o For emergencies at night, Duty Instructor– 07977 259633.

Shop, Bar and vending

Pass to the right of Reception and follow the path down to the shop / bar. Open from 6pm to 7pm and from 8.30pm to 10.30/11pm. The shop lounge is open all the time and has a pool table (50p) and table football. Drinks vending machines outside the Dining Room.

Cool!

MattH - I can't put a face to your name, but I guess we will meet at the weekend! Are you happy with where you are going?

Snooky - are you camping, or just day tripping?

I'm a new guy. Joined for a paddle on Bristol Harbour a couple of weeks ago and went to the recent Biblins weekend. I'm pretty much a raw beginner (well, 20 year hiatus at least). Would be good to have a go but happy to entertain myself if i really need a bit more experience before I head out into surf.

Happy on directions etc. Think i have driven past before and have had a look on google.

Just day tripping unfortunately, will be there about 1 ish - I'll bring my surf boat, so if Martin is reading this he can borrow it (and anyone else for that matter)

Cheers,
Snooky

It was a good trip, thank you all who attended, 12 stayed for 2 nights, 2 stayed for 1 night and we had 3 day visitors on Saturday. Weather was excellent, and made a nice roundup to the summer.

Surf on the Saturday was quite variable and quite large further out back - for me at least it was just a day of survival! 2-4 feet waves with some wave faces feeling like they were 6 feet and above!

Surf on the Sunday was perfect conditions for all the beginners and those trying to improve technique. 1-2 feet waves with some faces of 3-4 feet.

Thank you all for coming and making the trip worthwhile. See you surfers next summer!
