Post SAFETY - Lock Gates and Sluices! Reply with quote
Hi All,

As it is now the summer and we are spending the occassional Tuesday night on the river Avon at Saltford and various other locations with lock gates and sluices. I think it is worth everyone new and old having a read of this post and the EA poster as linked below.

Locks and Sluices are extremely dangerous, especially to kayakers as they paddle near, walk next to (with boats on shoulders) and cross lock gates. Here are a few basic safety tips to stick to:
    - NEVER PADDLE IN A LOCK
    - AVOID PADDLING NEAR THE LOCK GATES AS THEY CAN OPEN AT ANY TIME
    - WHEN CARRYING YOUR BOAT AROUND A LOCK, ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU CARRY IT ON THE WATERSIDE. THIS WAY YOUR OTHER HAND IS FREE TO GRAB A RAILING IF YOU SLIP AND YOUR BOAT WILL GO RATHER THAN YOU.
    - TO HELP WITH THESE SAFETY TIPS HERE IS A HANDY SAFETY POSTER: http://www.watersafetykids.co.uk/pdfs/Locks-drwg.pdf

Cheers,

James
