Post Open boating intro to white water Reply with quote
Hi All
Again we find ourselves coming up to that time when we take the open boats out for their winter runs. The first one is on Saturday the 17th November. Currently I have the following names
Hugh, Leonie, and John Woods, all have boas reserved for them if they still want them. That means that currently we have a spare boat for anyone else who wants to come.
I intend to run the Dart from Buckfastleigh to Staverton for the first trip to get everyone in the swing for paddling.
May I ask that if possible you come equipped with more than just a boat and paddle.
Ideal kit list would be - 20M throwline with a karabina to act as a swim line, 5M tape with HMS screw gate Karabina, first aid kit, If you do not have access to these items please don't rush out to get but I will be going through the need to have them on the course. All 3 are vital to YOUR safety!!!!!!
I will post on here next week with times and meeting place when I have a clearer idea of the water conditions. Any questions please contact me on robwheatley@blueyonder.co.uk

See you soon Rob

Hi Rob,
Yes I'm still up for it, though must admit not keen on that stretch of water that I found pretty boring last year Sad

Post First Open boat session Reply with quote
The reason for the choice of river is it meets the needs of the group and will allow paddlers from last year to re-aquatint themselves with moving water and for new paddlers to begin to develop the necessary skills.
Second session is likely to be on the Usk followed by a third session on the Dart Loop.
This year I will be including basic white water safety and rescue aimed at canoes on the course.
There will be elements of getting wet on purpose! (for those that are willing) so may I suggest you carry dry clothes with you in the boat as well as having some in the car at the end.
The safety and rescue will focus on your safety and what to do if you get tipped out of a canoe mainly, with a little on rescuing others.

Rob, I've sent you an email. Hopefully it won't end up in your spam folder?

Hi All

We will meet in the lay by on the A384 just off the A38 near Buckfastleigh, the meet time will be 10:00am in the layby. See attached map.
You will need to collect and transport your own canoe to and from the venue.
Please ensure you have plenty of warm clothing and to have some spare clothes in waterproof bags in the canoe. If I find a good location there may be some swimming etc looking at how to self rescue in the case of a capsize.
You will also need to have a lunch some spare food and a hot drink.
As I mentioned before if you can lay your hands on some throw bags and karabiners please bring them as well.

Hugh – do you know where the boats are kept? And do you need help to put it on the car?
I think the best allocation of canoes will be as follows

John & Neil to have the Red Old Town 158’s
Hugh and Leonie to have the Green Travelers

See You all there

Rob
I have emailed this out to all who are going please check your emails for map etc

Hear, hear!

Good company and well-timed advice - plus useful tips after the event! (I'm sure that rock slid out and shoved me in).
Gorgeous scenery, too. Who could ask for more? Very Happy
