Post July 23rd - 24th Surfing Weekend Reply with quote
This is a camping weekend next to the sea at Appledore, with two days surfing or chilling on the beach at Westward Ho! The camping will be a field just outside the entrance to Skern Lodge Activity Centre which has plenty of space and a great view.

We have access to the Lodge facilities including showers and toilets plus an outside cold water sink for tidying up. In the camping field there is just a drinking water tap - it is not a full campsite so facilities such as electric hookup are missing. Camping is £8 per person per night.

This is not a club event with coaches or leaders just a gathering of club members for a fun weekend by the sea. We can help out and give some guidance to get you going. There is also the chance to try out proper surf boats if they are available - just be warned, you may like them! Family are welcome to join as well.

If you don't fancy the water, there is plenty of opportunity to walk the coast paths and relax in Appledore and just generally enjoy the area.

I plan to arrive Friday evening and camp Friday and Saturday nights.

I need to let Skern Lodge know the numbers in about 3 weeks time, so if you would like to go please post here with which nights you will be staying.

We are only running 1 surfing weekend this year and it will be great to see lots of people turn up.

Post BA & helmet needed Reply with quote
Bit of a favour to ask -
a) could I please borrow a BA & helmet for one of my guests?
b) could someone who's going at the weekend please pick one up for me on Tuesday and bring it down? Will need to be a medium size.
Thanks so much
John

John,

As non club members we would like them to make a contribution to hiring the kit say £3 to the club. We would also like to highlight that it will be your responsibility to ensure it is returned safely and in good condition!

I should also point out that the BA's in the Tuesday trailer are not really suited to WW or Surfing, these are the new basic spec flat water BAs with only one strap to tighten. The BAs suitable for surfing are those stored in the Barn. I'd advise you speak to Neil P as he will be taking the trailer on Tuesday and will also be going to Westward Ho so could pick it up and bring it for you.

Thanks,

Thanks James. Contribution to the club is no problem. I'll message Neil and see if he'll oblige.
Cheers
John

Hi Foxy,

If it is not too late Jackie and Trevor hope to attend for definitely Saturday and hopefully Friday depending when I finish that day.

Sorry I could not let you know before. I have had back trouble for a few weeks now and was waiting for sufficient improvement.

Looking forward to catching up.

Please help everything run smoothly by reading the following information.

Camping

o Please drive slowly, and take care walking along the drive.

o Football (if applicable!) – in the field please, not around the buildings.

o Please use the litter bins provided.

Toilets and Showers

Come in the drive, walk diagonally across the Orchard grass, and there are gents

and ladies toilets and showers in the far corner (to the right of the dining room

entrance).

There are more toilets in the left door of the dining room building – ladies

downstairs and gents upstairs.

Water

Water tap at the far side of the camping field. There is cold water and a sink for

washing up on the back of the Orchard building. Come in the drive gateway and

turn immediately right.

Valuables

We don’t normally have a security problem, but any valuables left in tents or cars

are at your own risk. Valuables may be left in the office if you wish, with access

9am to 5pm (or lock in your car).

Residential groups

We also have some residential groups staying with us. Both group leaders and

Skern Lodge are very aware of security when bringing pupils away from home.

Please help us avoid any problems by not entering any of the accommodation

buildings, Courtyard area or drying rooms. Thank you.

Activity equipment

There is strictly no access to the Assault Course, High Ropes, Climbing Walls,

Swimming Pool, stores and other obvious activity areas without a Skern

Instructor.

Fire Alarm

If the fire alarm sounds whilst you are here, return to your tents and account for

all your group. If there is any problem, report to Skern staff by the equipment

stores.

Skern Staff

The office will be manned from 9am to 5pm each day. Please call into the office

if you have any queries.

o For emergencies at night, Duty Instructor – 07977 259633.

Shop, Bar and vending

Pass to the right of Reception and follow the path down to the Shop / Bar. Open

from 6pm to 7pm and from 8.30pm to 10.30/11pm on Saturday only. The shop

lounge is open all the time and has a pool table (50p) and table football. Drinks

vending machines outside the Dining Room.

Looks like we have a good sized group for the weekend! 21-24 - very impressive! I aim to be there on Friday evening in good time, but also may go for a cheeky surf if there is time. A lot of you have been here before, so normal rules apply.

The gate to the field should be open, if not, park up, set up camp in the field and chill.

Any questions, please ask.

There are a number of pubs in Appledore.

Nearest supermarket is Tesco in Bideford.

Also worth mentioning that no dogs are allowed.

Any late comers who wish to join, should be able to do so. Just let me know.

Looks like we will have fairly friendly (not too big) surf conditions at the weekend:

And the weather also looks reasonable, cloudy and not too damp.

What a great weekend everyone! 29 people attended over the 2 days. It was great to see such a good turnout.

I have provisionally booked another surf weekend for the 17th/18th September... see you again then? Smile
