Post Intro to WW Session 1 (10th October) Reply with quote
Hi all,

Well the winter boating season is nearly here and as in previous years we will be running an Intro to white water course.

Once again as well as an Intro group we will run an Improvers group. Which group you go in will be decided by the coaches! The intention is for both groups to run the same river, however might be different sections.

No change in cost, which is it is still £5 per day.

If you need boat and kit then please contact Colin Southcombe.

The first session date is Saturday 10th October.

The first event will be at Symonds Yat on the Wye. This will give everyone the opportunity to try things out in a safe environment, even hone those rescue skills and not involve a long paddle (hence more time learning and carrying boat back up to start again!).

The location/rivers for the other dates will of course depend on how people get on and what the weather/water levels are like and as in previous years there is no guarantee that we will paddle or it will be on the day programmed. I will try and update information on this forum.

We need to know who intends going so we can have the right amount of coaches, therefore can you please post on this thread. This will also enable the paddlers to try and organise lift shares. Thanks you to those that have already emailed me. Can coaches/helper post as well (please).

So I hear some of you ask ‘well what are we going to do on this course’?
Well the whole idea is to improve your paddling skills on WW so that when you go on the trips we have planned (see programme), you feel happy about doing them and we have a good feeling that you will be an active part of that group and be able to paddle and conduct yourselves in a safe manner and hence have an enjoyable time.

Now I hear you ask ‘go on be more specific’?
Well the sort of skills you will be learning (and this is not exhaustive) are:
Reading rivers and the features on them, e.g. identify eddies, stoppers, downstream Vs, upstream Vs.
What are the common signals that the club use when running rivers.
Breaking out of flow (into eddy)
Breaking into flow (from eddy)
Ferry gliding (forwards/backwards and where you use them)
Edge & Lean
Speed & Acceleration (why move at a different speed than the water)
What to do when you are being rescued (and be in no doubt there will be times when you might have a little swim and need rescuing).
e.g. How to use and receive a throw line. How to swim in a rapid, what to do with your boat and paddle while swimming.

For those doing the improvers they will be honing the skills above and potentially learning some more. e.g. High crosses, boofing, flaring, rescuing and definitely much more of an understanding of reading rivers.

Last point is how to buy your coach a pint in the pub afterwards! (this hasn't changed from last year)

Cheers

James and rest of the team of coaches/helpers.

James , i have recommended this course to a guy i met recently , who plans to come with a friend. They have apparently been looking for a club for some time , with a view to learning properly , and someone put them in touch with me. His first name is Matt' , and i am led to believe he ,and his friend ,will be going to the first pool session to speak with you there.

It may come to nothing , but he seems genuine , so thought i would give you the heads up.

Matt' Sykes is his name. He will contact you shortly.

I will be at the pool session , but unfortunately i am to busy with a kitchen extension at home at the moment , plus lots of "proper" jobs Monday to Friday. I'm hoping to break the back of it in about a month , so should be free after that.

Hi All,

Plan is to meet at 10am above Symmonds Yat in the car park near the Saracens Head Pub.
Bring some coins as we have to pay for parking! Please can everyone try to car share as well as it's only a small car park!

Don't forget your £5 for coaching!

This session will take up most of the day so please ensure you bring lunch, something to drink and plenty of warm layers.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE EVERYONE COMING ON SATURDAY NEEDS TO A MEMBER OF THE CLUB

Please count me and Tom in for this trip.

I have room in the van for anybody that needs a lift from weston. Just message me on 07988798twotwotwo. Message rather than call as I am working nights.

Wow! What a great day! So many SACC paddlers; male and female, older and younger, long-standing and new members....

Thanks again to Gary for great coaching and giving me the confidence to have a bash at rolling; first time I've tried in a river rather than the pool. And he only had to push me a little bit... ;-)

Hi all

Had a great time on Saturday, a massive thank you to all the coaches and rescuers.

Sorry I wasn't at the pub, I somehow managed to get lost on the way.

Can't wait to see the photos
