Post Intro to WW Reply with quote
Hi there Everyone

Well the winter boating season is nearly here and as in previous years we will be running an Intro to white water course.

No change in cost, which is it is still £5 per day.

If you need boat and kit then please contact on here to arrange collection of kit.

The first session date is Sunday 15th October.

The first event will be at on the River Barle, we will be doing Dulverton to Exebridge. We will aim to meet at The Anchor Inn, Exebridge. This is all dependant on river conditions so keep an eye out.

The location/rivers for the other dates will of course depend on how people get on and what the weather/water levels are like and as in previous years there is no guarantee that we will paddle or it will be on the day programmed. I will try and update information on this forum.

We need to know who intends going so we can have the right amount of coaches, therefore can you please post on this thread. This will also enable the paddlers to try and organise lift shares. Thanks you to those that have already emailed me. Can coaches/helper post as well (please).

So I hear some of you ask ‘well what are we going to do on this course’?
Well the whole idea is to improve your paddling skills on WW so that when you go on the trips we have planned (see programme), you feel happy about doing them and we have a good feeling that you will be an active part of that group and be able to paddle and conduct yourselves in a safe manner and hence have an enjoyable time.

Now I hear you ask ‘go on be more specific’?
Well the sort of skills you will be learning (and this is not exhaustive) are:
Reading rivers and the features on them, e.g. identify eddies, stoppers, downstream Vs, upstream Vs.
What are the common signals that the club use when running rivers.
Breaking out of flow (into eddy)
Breaking into flow (from eddy)
Ferry gliding (forwards/backwards and where you use them)
Edge & Lean
Speed & Acceleration (why move at a different speed than the water)
What to do when you are being rescued (and be in no doubt there will be times when you might have a little swim and need rescuing).
e.g. How to use and receive a throw line. How to swim in a rapid, what to do with your boat and paddle while swimming.

Last point is how to buy your coach a pint in the pub afterwards! (this hasn't changed from last year)

Aswell as the Intro the aim will be to run a Kids group - This will essentially be the same but for under 18 yrs. The most important thing is that all parents that want to bring there kids to join this group must contact myself at the pool or luke_moore13@hotmail.com.

In combination with this training we will be aiming to run a 3 star assessment if and when needs be

Get in contact with any questions and post your interest below.

Luke

Hi,

I’d like to take part if I can.

I’m quite a bit behind Ciaran and Matt on experience but really enjoyed Biblins and would like to push on from there.

I’d need to borrow some club kit but am aiming to be at the pool sessions if Im around for them so could collect from there.

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

If you let us know what you need we can certainly sort you out. We moved boats and paddles to the pool last weekend but if you need a vest, helmet or deck we may need to pick them up from the store (so will need to know what size you need in advance).

Matt

PS you practically overtook me on the Yat so you should really enjoy this!

I have a helmet, deck and vest that I need to return so a trip to the store can probably be avoided, and you're more than welcome to use my old deck as it will keep you a bit dryer than the club ones (will make sure you get it on properly this time ;) )

I can help on the 15th and the 12th Nov.

If there are two many 'hangers on' I am happy to take them and do 3* assessments.

Ok So we will be paddling the Dart Loop, the group we have currently looks a strong intro group so it should be a good choice.

It will likely be very busy down at Newbridge, TQ13 7NT, so there early to get some parking but we will be planning for on the water at 10am so I suggested arriving for 9.30am.

Weather is looking good, dress to keep warm and we will sort groups tomorrow morning.

I suspect we will have a few different groups with a hangers on group, a kiddies group and an intro group. We will see.

Cheers Luke

Hi,
just wondering what time we should be finished as I'm trying to fulfil an engagement in Cardiff in the evening. Should we be off the water by 1600?
thanks

Looking forward to it

I’m planning to drive down from Yatton. Plenty of space in the car if anybody wants a lift.
