Post Cheap Camping for August Bank Holiday Reply with quote
The next opportunity to camp cheaply by the sea is August bank holiday.

This is a camping weekend next to the sea at Appledore. With three days surfing on the beach at Westward Ho! The camping will be a field just outside the entrance to Skern Lodge Activity Centre which has plenty of space and a great view and is just £5 per person per night.

We have access to the Lodge facilities including showers and toilets plus an outside cold water sink for tidying up. They also have a small bar we may be able to use, though the 5 pubs in Appledore are only a 10 minute walk away. In the camping field there is just a drinking water tap - it is not a full campsite so facilities such as electric hookup are missing. If you don’t fancy camping they may have some residential accommodation available at £36 pppn including breakfast & dinner. Breakfast and dinner are available in the lodge for campers if booked. Accommodation and meals need to be booked in advance please.

This is not a club event with coaches or leaders just a gathering of club members for a fun long weekend by the sea.

Normally Skern Lodge have a good demo fleet of surf boats that we can try but they may be in use on the Saturday and Sunday as there is a Surf Kayak Skills coaching workshop going on. On the Sunday you should have the opportunity to see some of the England team members performing (and helping out) with those attending the workshop.

Please post here if you are going to attend.

John

Anyone else interested? I'll have to ring Skern on Thursday to let them know numbers.

Surf forecast is looking promising, maybe a bit windy which will mess it up a tad but fair sized waves. Weather forecast always less reliable than surf forecast so hopefully the wind won't be as strong and we'll have slightly smaller but cleaner waves.

John,

Would I be right in assuming that because of number that this is going to be cancelled, or not?

Just need to know so I can do something else this weekend.

Cheers

Post CANCELLED Reply with quote
This is now cancelled due to lack of interest. To be fair, the surf forecast for Saturday is dire though Sunday & Monday should work. The SKS workshop I'm booked on isn't cancelled yet but I'm hoping it either is or is moved to Sun/Mon. If cancelled I'll probably go down somewhere on Sunday.

The next date is Sept 15/16 for those that may be interested.

Well, it turned out fine. Saturday was a good day, dry sometimes sunny, though windy in the afternoon. Sunday was sunny and with good surf all day. Lots of stuff going on in Appledore. Monday started wet but cleared up then a couple more showers later on. The wind picked up as the day progressed. The surf was small at 9am but steadily picked up all morning to a few 6ft sets when I got off (the last of our group) at 1.30pm.

Glad I was there.
