Post Biblins 9th 10th 11th June 2017 Reply with quote
June Biblins,

Hi Everyone,

Biblins is booked for the 9th 10th 11th June 2017

For those of you who have not been before this is one of the club's main training events and a well attended social event. Depending on interest we can run Paddle Power, 1*, 2*, 3* and improver's training in kayaks and open boats to cover the BCU syllabus. 1* courses can include assessment and there will be the opportunity for those who have done some 2* training before to do a BCU 2* assessment (includes open boat and kayak skills). We camp at the youth site by the Wye and evenings are spent socialising around a camp fire. As per last year we be running a throw line Olympics competition on the Saturday evening so get practicing!

It would be useful to check the http://sacc.co.uk/HTML/CourseStructure.html on the website to check which level course you would benefit from. Don't forget your logbooks, these can be printed and filled out during the weekend to record your progress.

PLEASE let us know which courses you are interested in by posting on the forum or e-mailing Neil (jai.palmer@hotmail.co.uk), when responding. Please email colin if your require boat hire at c.southcombe@hotmail.co.uk.

We also need to know who is available to coach and help on courses!

Biblins costs (Last years - might be slightly different this year.):
camping £3.50 per child, £6.00 per adult per night (includes launching)
day rate £3.50 per person (includes launching)
extended use £1.50 per person to use facilities after noon (on last day)
car parking £2.00 per vehicle per day
launching fee £1.50 per boat (youth cost)

SACC costs:
Training courses £10.00 per person per day.
Boat hire £5 - Either the open boat trailer or kayak trailer can be brought depending on which boats are needed.

Campsite Additional Information
Additional information can be found by looking at the Biblins website here: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/biblins

PLEASE NOTE - NO CARAVANS, CAMPERVANS OR ALCOHOL (same as in previous years)

For those of you arriving on Saturday morning could you please be ready to meet at 9.00 so if you want to put tents up before paddling then you need to arrive earlier. I expect most of us will arrive Friday afternoon / evening

I am hoping that several of you are now ready for the BCU 2* assessment, please follow the links on the sacc website to check the syllabus to make sure you know what the 2* award covers in both a kayak and open boat. Let me know if you think you are ready for assessment.

Please car share if possible as the warden does not like too many cars on the site. Also remember it is a youth site so we must not be seen drinking alcohol and leaving any evidence - keep any bottles and cans well hidden in your tent / vehicle and take home the empties.

Just so everyone is aware we are on pitch 9 & 10 which is near the end of the site following the track left from the main gate.

Please can everyone also remember to ensure they close the gates, keep your speed down and not park on the grass.

look forward to hearing from you,

Cheers

Neil

I will be coming too.

As far as training / assessment is concerned I'll take the advice of the coaches.

I have looked through the syllabus and assessment notes and feel pretty confident as far a 1* is concerned. If a coach is available on a Tuesday evening it would be good to try this before Biblins (no problem if not).

I think I could give most of the 2* kayak side a reasonable crack but would need a bit more practice in the open boats. I am also useless at getting in and out of the boat 'in a controlled manner whilst afloat without use of the paddle' (though I have had lots of practice at self-rescue). Could use more recovery stroke practice too.

I am a long way away from 3* but would like a little practice on the Yat whilst I am there if possible. I can practice all of the flat water stuff on my own but don't have much experience of the white stuff, especially the repetitive technical stuff that develops skills, so Biblins would be a good opportunity for me.

Cheers,

Matt

I'll be there! For the whole weekend from Friday evening. Ideally I'd like to get some practice on the Yat in both kayak and open boat (not at the same time though obviously!).

Post Kit for Biblins Reply with quote
If anyone needs boats and kit for Biblins you can get it on Tuesday eve at the Congresbury Meeting place.
Or collect it from the boat barn on Friday, late afternoon,(4ish) when I collect the open boat trailer to take to Biblins.

Cheers all

I'm coming on Saturday (poss Sunday too) with my son Zach who is 14. Zach would like to be in the same group as his friend Tom please (not sure if Tom has signed up yet) and on Saturday would like to do kayaking please. Zach has done 2 sea trips in the same kayak as me for 4 and 5 hours abroad a couple of years back. Other than that he is novice. He open boats with me.

I'd prefer kayaking. I'm happy to go on Yat or a not too strenuous 2 star day on Saturday. I cracked my ribs 5 weeks back so this is a test!

Can I pick up a boat and some kit for Zach tomorrow night please? I'm used to going to the barn alone if you're happy with that Neil. Only thing is which kayak would be best for a 5 foot 7 14 year old?

Thanks,

Tina

Hi all.

Looks like the weather might be damp on Saturday. Make sure you have warm clothing for the evening and plenty of good food.

And a chair for the sitting around the fire.

For anyone who is collecting boats at 4pm tomorrow and is unsure of where its, here is my phone number. 07791752643.

Gutted to only be able to make the Sunday, but it was fab and the trip was great, loads of Kingfishers, Salmon and Cormorants to see along the way; well done to all who helped organise things behind the scenes Smile
